YouTube’s Testing a New Shorts Discovery Option to Drive More Usage Published
YouTube is moving further into TikTok territory, this time testing new random feed prompts that direct users to short content.
As you can see in this example posted by Android Police, YouTube is testing new prompts for when users can't decide what they want to watch within the app.
This is a very different approach considering that people typically come to YouTube with a specific focus. But on TikTok, more and more people are opening their For You feed to see what the algorithm is showing them. This will give most users access to his feed of YouTube Shorts, but it could have similar results and increase usage and engagement.
According to Android Police, the new feed appears to show users' clips based on a variety of signals, including their viewing history, subscribed creators/channels, and video likes. In other words, it's a near-exact replica of the short video-based TikTok system, which makes a lot of sense considering the recent surge in short video usage.
Will this make YouTube more of a casual entertainment option like TikTok, rather than a targeted viewing option focused on discovery?
This test is currently only available on a limited basis, so it's probably worth at least trying.
But given the potential for even more discovery with this new feed, there's no doubt that short-form videos will become an important option on YouTube.
