WhatsApp now allows you to hide your IP address during calls

For added security, WhatsApp now allows you to hide your IP address during calls

You can also route calls through WhatsApp's servers, but the company notes that doing so may have a slight impact on audio quality.

Calls on WhatsApp are now (optionally) even more secure for users who value the app's privacy the most. As explained in this blog post, WhatsApp has added a new "Protect your IP address during calls" switch to settings that protects your IP from the people on the other end of your calls. When enabled, calls will be routed through Meta/WhatsApp servers, hiding your real IP address.

“Most calling products in use today feature peer-to-peer connectivity between participants. This direct connection allows for faster data transfer and improved call quality, but participants also It also means we need to know your IP address,” WhatsApp’s Daniel Sommerman, Sebastian Messmer and Ataullah Baig wrote in a post. "IP addresses may contain information that some of our most privacy-conscious users have in mind, such as geographic location and Internet service provider."

However, improving privacy requires compromise. WhatsApp notes that the new settings will "reduce call quality." This is repeated on this page, which explains how to enable the new settings, and WhatsApp says, ``When you use call forwarding, the quality of your calls may be affected.'' Also, calls are always end-to-end. It also emphasizes what happens at the end. New relay options are used. Another measure mentioned in the blog post is the option to silence unknown callers (first announced in June), which WhatsApp says will prevent spam interruptions and reduce complex cybersecurity attacks. Routes will also be cut off. “Protecting user privacy and security is absolutely necessary for WhatsApp to achieve its mission of enabling the world's private communications,” the blog post said. “These new security features are combined with many other protections to keep people safe on WhatsApp.” The new “IP Protection” switch can be found in the “Privacy” section of WhatsApp Settings.
