Mikrotik Vlan setup step by step with explanation

Mikrotik Vlan setup step by step

Configuring a VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) on a MikroTik router or switch is a common task in network management. VLANs allow you to divide your network into logical groups, thereby increasing security, reducing broadcast traffic, and improving network performance. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to configure VLAN on MikroTik devices:

Step 1: Go to MikroTik Router/Switch

You can access your MikroTik device via the web interface (WinBox) or SSH/Telnet. For this example, we will use the web interface.

Open a web browser. Enter the IP address of your MikroTik device in the address bar.

Sign in with your credentials.

Step 2: Create VLAN interface

Click "Appearance" in the left menu.

Find the interface you want to add a VLAN to (for example, ether1, if it's an Ethernet port).

Click on the interface then click on the “VLAN” tab. Click the “+” button to add a new VLAN.

Enter the VLAN ID (for example, 10) and name (for example, VLAN10).

Click "Apply" to create the VLAN interface.

Step 3: Configure VLAN on physical interface

Return to the "Appearance" section.

Find the physical interface (e.g. ether1) and click on it. In the "VLAN" field, select the VLAN interface you created (for example, VLAN10).

Click "Apply" to associate the VLAN interface with the physical port.

Step 4: Assign IP address (optional)

In the “IP” section, click “Address”.

Click the “+” button to add an IP address for the VLAN interface.

Enter the IP address and subnet mask (for example, 192.168.10.1/24) for VLAN10.

Click "Apply" to save the configuration. Step 5: Configure switch port (if any)

If you are working with a MikroTik switch, you will need to configure the switch port for VLAN tagging.

Click "Conversions" in the left menu.

Find the appropriate switch port (e.g. switch1-cpu).

Under “VLAN Mode”, select “Security” or “All” depending on your needs. “Secure” means only the specified VLANs are allowed, while “All” means all VLANs are allowed on this port. In the "VLAN" field, specify the VLAN IDs allowed on the port (for example, 10,20).

Click "Apply" to save the configuration.

Step 6: Configure firewall rules (Optional)

If you want to control traffic between VLANs, you may need to configure firewall rules in the "IP" section.

Click "Firewall" in the left menu.

Create the necessary rules to control traffic between VLANs.

Step 7: Test your setup

Connect devices to the configured VLAN and test to ensure they are segmented correctly and can communicate as expected. That's it! You have successfully configured VLAN on your MikroTik router or switch. Remember to back up your configuration and remember to follow security and network segmentation best practices.
