1. 1
Determine if you are using an Apple or Intel Mac. Most new Macs introduced in late 2020 and later have switched to using Apple silicon in the system. [1]
• To do this, click the Apple menu () > Then see if there is anything about that Mac that says "Chip" (Apple silicon) or "Processor" (Intel processor)
2
Shut down or restart your Mac.This will give you access to the recovery tool.
• Your computer needs internet access if you don't have a local copy of macOS.[2]
3
Hold down ⌘ Cmd+R immediately after pressing the power button. This key combination tells your Mac to reinstall the same version of macOS that you already have installed. If you're hoping for a different version, try these alternatives:
• To update macOS to the latest version compatible with your Mac, press ⌥ Opt+⌘ Cmd+R.For example, an early 2012 Mac will not be compatible with macOS 10.15, Catalina.[3]
• On an Intel-based Mac, to install the macOS that came with your Mac, no matter how outdated it is, press ⇧ Shift+⌥ Opt+⌘ Cmd+R. If you don't have version 10.12.14, Sierra, this key combination does not work.
• If you have never installed 10.12.14 (Sierra), ⌘ Cmd+R will install the operating system without associating it with your Apple ID. This key combination allows you to erase the disc before giving it to someone else.[4]
• On an Apple Silicone Mac, you can also turn on the Mac and hold down the power button until the startup options screen appears. Then click on the gear icon labeled "Options".[5]
4 Release the keys when you see the Apple logo
5
Choose whether to erase the disc. Note that this will erase your drive and lose all information on your computer. You can also choose "Restore from Time Machine Backup"; if you don't want to lose it all.[7]
6
Click to select Reinstall macOS. This will reinstall macOS but keep your user files and settings.
7
Click Next. You start by reinstalling macOS.
8
Follow the onscreen instructions to install macOS. This also includes the selection of the installation location of the operating system.
• Don't put your Mac to sleep or close the lid during the setup process. Your Mac may restart several times, showing a blank screen and some progress bars, but that doesn't mean the installation is complete.[8]
